Domino’s Artisan Creates Stunning 3-D Domino Tile Installations
Domino’s is famous for putting customers first. In fact, it’s one of the company’s core values. When David Brandon was the CEO of Domino’s before he was replaced by Jim Doyle, he made sure to listen to the company’s customers. This led to changes like a relaxed dress code, new leadership training programs and direct employee feedback. In fact, the Detroit Free Press calls this line of communication “the domino effect.”
Domino is a popular game in which players draw and place tiles on edge before them so that none can see each other’s. Each tile has a line down the middle with a number, or “pips.” The most common set of dominoes includes 28 tiles with pips ranging from zero (or blank) to six. The player who scores the most points in a specified number of rounds wins the game. Typically, each player begins the game by drawing a number of tiles and then placing them on-edge. The first tile is placed on the table (determined by drawing lots or whichever player holds the heaviest tile) and then a domino is played to the right or left of it. The resulting open ends of the two touching tiles must match (either all sides of the one are exposed or both of the open ends of the other). The next tile placed may then be either square to the original, or at a right angle depending on space constraints or a player’s whim.
A domino artisit creates some incredible designs with this simple game of physics. Hevesh says the main physical phenomenon at work is gravity, which pulls a knocked-over domino toward the ground and causes it to crash into the rest of the layout. Hevesh has worked on projects involving 300,000 dominoes and once helped set a Guinness World Record for the most dominoes in a circular arrangement: 76,017.
Hevesh tests each section of her massive installations to ensure they’ll fall as intended. And she even shoots each test in slow motion to make any necessary adjustments before a final, 3-D domino piece goes up. Her largest installations can take several nail-biting minutes to complete.
While the most well-known use of domino is in gaming, this game can also be used to teach math and other subjects, as well as help kids develop their motor skills. It is also a useful tool for teachers looking to incorporate critical thinking into their lessons.
The word domino is also often used to refer to a certain type of accident caused by the failure of one component in a chemical process, known as a domino effect. The name derives from the idea that once a single element in the chain fails, it can cause other elements to fail as well.
While the domino effect has been a significant factor in chemical accidents, it is important to note that other factors, such as personnel negligence and improper operation of equipment, can contribute to these accidents. These other factors must be considered in order to perform a complete analysis of an accident’s potential consequences, and to develop the best prevention measures.
